Research Presentation

Present your final project proposal and frame it as part of your research agenda for the rest of the course. Look at the Final Project Description then select an area of research that that you would like to investigate further and that can be addressed via physical computing and alternative interfaces. In that context, you will present a physical computing-based media project (e.g. artefact/system, media art installation, game, etc).

For this project you will works in groups of 3. You will your choose group members (instructor will not assign them). Your presentations should be short (5-minutes, plus 5 more minutes of Q & A). Your presentation should include your vision for the project (e.g what you would want it to be in its ideal sense), and present early mock ups of your design (diagrams, circuit schematics, sketches, illustrations, etc), discuss the ideas/themes of the project, how you will use critical reflection, what design strategies (e.g. ambiguity, inverting traditional assumptions, etc.) you will use and how it will be implemented technically. You will submit a pdf of this presentation as well as present it orally to the class. You can use whatever presentation software you like (Powerpoint, Keynote, Google Slides, etc), as long as you export a pdf of the presentation file.

Presentation Guidelines. The presentation should be an overview of the area of research you are focusing on. In addition to a general overview of the area, you should show examples of projects created in that area. In general, be light on text and heavy on images and videos.

Here are some guidelines that should help you as organize your presentation.

  • Introduction: a summary of the project, usually in one image (and a title), that encapsulates your project. A sentence or two explaining it would also be helpful.
  • Background: the idea(s), event(s), circumstances, history, etc that lead to the project. This section should establish some context for your project and should reflect the results of your research and readings.
  • Project Description: this is the main body of your presentation and should contain:
  • a detailed description of the project:
  • discuss your critical context  – e.g. what is being overlooked or not sufficiently addressed in the design and development of a given technology
  • what it is, what it does, what it looks like, how it works, what it’s made of, dimensions, etc.
  • Use photographs, maps, diagrams, sketches.
  • How people view it, interact with it, what design strategies are you using, etc
  • How does it look at some problem/issue in technology, society, culture in a new way?
  • Why it is important; why should we care?
  • Summary/Conclusion: sum everything up – maybe show a demo if possible

Make sure sure follow the Assignment Reporting Requirements & Deliverables as outlined in the Syllabus.

Assignment submission is through myCourses.
